The challenge was to make time to create a print a day for the entire month of May in 2024
Based on my love of Northern Ontario landscapes, this series brings me back to memories of time well spent there on beautiful, stormy, quiet days and nights. These monotypes capture the mood of a moment in time, in a certain light, at a certain time of day, in our beautiful Northern landscape.
What is a Monotype print?
A Monotype print is a unique, one of a kind print. It is an original handmade print with one major difference from other printmaking processes: the artist creates exactly one print, instead of multiples (called editions). This is due to the way a monotype is made.
I created this series by manipulating etching ink and materials on a smooth plexiglass plate. By adding and subtracting ink using a variety of materials to create texture and form, my image was created only in the ink. The plate remained untouched and was used many times for each new print.
The image was then transferred to archival (acid free) paper using a printmaking press. By pressing the plate & paper together with the ink sandwiched in between, texture is created that is not possible when using other techniques. Only one print is created using this process. Once the ink is transferred to the paper, it is gone from the plate and cannot be replicated.
